About Sembaro
What we do
Sembaro is a set of calculators for pay and tax in Korea. It is run by the Sembaro team. Besides the result, each calculator shows how the amount was reached and which law it is based on.
Calculators available in English
The Korean site has more calculators (parental leave pay, unemployment benefit, severance pay and others), listed on the Korean About page.
Where the numbers come from
We use only the original text of Korean laws (from the Ministry of Government Legislation) and official notices from government agencies. Numbers from blogs or other calculator sites are not used as sources. Each calculator shows the law, its effective date and the date we last checked it.
How we check them
The code that does the calculation is written separately from the test cases, whose expected results are worked out by hand from the law text. All test cases must pass before a calculator is published, and an independent reviewer then re-opens the law text and compares it with what is shown on screen.
When a law changes
Legal numbers are kept in one data file per calculator, together with the article, effective date and check date. When a law changes we update that file, run the same checks again and add a dated entry to the calculator's update log. The source badge on each calculator shows the effective date and the last check, and the law status page (Korean) lists them all in one place.
Found a mistake?
Please tell us through the Contact page, with the calculator name and the numbers you entered. If it is an error we fix it and record it in the update log.
Advertising
We plan to show advertisements. They will be labeled "Advertisements" and kept separate from results and sources. See the Privacy notice for details.
Limits
Results are estimates. Actual amounts are decided by your employer and the authorities. Cases a calculator cannot cover are listed on its page.
